Ernest Mims Selma, AL Obituary, Death :Dallas County School System Mourns Loss of dedicated member of its transportation department

The Dallas County School System and the wider Selma community mourn the profound loss of Mr. Ernest “Pokey” Mims, who passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026. For years, Mr. Mims was far more than a bus driver; he was a steadfast cornerstone of the district’s transportation department and a mentor to countless colleagues.

Serving as a dedicated Southern zone driver for Tipton-Durant Middle School, Mr. Mims ensured the safe passage of students with unwavering reliability. His impact, however, extended far beyond his daily route. As a trusted CDL trainer for the district, he played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of numerous commercial driver’s license holders in Selma and Dallas County. His patience, expertise, and deep commitment to professionalism helped launch and solidify the careers of many who now serve our community.

Known affectionately as “Pokey,” he was respected for his skill, his calm demeanor, and his dedication to his craft. His absence leaves a void not only in the transportation office but also in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. The legacy of safety, mentorship, and quiet dedication he built will continue to guide the district for years to come.

Our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers are with his family, friends, and all who loved him during this incredibly difficult time. Ernest Mims’s service and spirit will be profoundly missed.
