BOSTON, Massachusetts – The city has lost a pillar of its twin communities of firefighting and Irish culture with the passing of William “Billy” Carey. A dedicated Boston Firefighter assigned to the renowned Rescue Company 2, and a proud, longtime member of The Fenian Sons, Carey was a true Boston original.
Brother Carey wore his heritage and his vocation not as separate garments, but as a single, woven cloth of service and camaraderie. On the job, he answered the city’s most urgent calls with the skill and fearlessness demanded of Rescue 2, earning the deep respect of his fellow firefighters. Off-duty, he helped preserve and celebrate Boston’s Irish soul, taking the stage with The Fenian Sons to keep traditional music alive for generations. In both roles, he embodied a spirit of brotherhood, loyalty, and unwavering dedication.
His passing leaves a profound void in the firehouse, on the cultural scene, and in the hearts of all who knew him. He was a man who represented the very best of Boston—tough, skilled, proud of his roots, and deeply committed to his community.
