George Kalkounos Obituary, Chicago Prime Steakhouse Mourns Loss Of George Kalkounos
The Kalkounos family and the extended family of Chicago Prime Restaurants announce with profound sorrow the passing of our beloved founder and patriarch, George A. Kalkounos. On Tuesday, February 17th, 2026, George departed this life at the age of 75, peacefully and in the loving embrace of his wife, Maggie.
George’s story was the embodiment of the American Dream. Arriving from Greece with little more than hope, he first settled in Brooklyn before finding his home in Chicago. Through unwavering discipline, immense sacrifice, and a genuine passion for service, he built a hospitality empire from the ground up. His journey through restaurant kitchens and dining rooms culminated in a celebrated career, marked by iconic establishments including Statesons, Chicago Prime Steakhouse, Five O’Clock Steakhouse, and many more.

For George, this was never merely a business. He loved every minute, viewing his customers not as patrons but as friends. His sincerity was felt by all who knew him. True to his spirit, George would not want us to mourn, but to celebrate a life magnificently lived—a life dedicated to achievement, hospitality, and profound love for his family and community.
His legacy endures in every life he touched: the team members he mentored, the countless guests he welcomed, and the family he cherished. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support.
To honor George’s memory, we invite you to enjoy one of his many interviews that captures his essence: [Link to Facebook interview].
