Resurrection Parish Mourns Loss Of Father Jim Chepponis Who Passed Away At 70

With profound sorrow, the Resurrection Parish Family announces the passing of our beloved pastor, Father Jim Chepponis, who died after a recent illness. He was 70 years old. A priest of the Pittsburgh Diocese ordained in 1985, Fr. Jim became a spiritual cornerstone for our community upon arriving at St. John Capistran in 2003.

Fr. Jim’s life was a harmonious blend of deep faith and artistic giftedness. He held a bachelor’s degree in music, with a major in organ and minor in voice, from St. Fidelis College and Slippery Rock University. This talent became a ministry, lifting hearts in worship for decades. His homilies, informed by a Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Systematic Theology from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, were insightful guides, translating scripture into daily life with clarity and compassion.

More than his accomplishments, it was his faithful, diligent pastoral care that defined him. He was a bright light to the parish and a comforting presence to all touched by his ministry—a true shepherd to his flock.

We invite the community to pray for the repose of his soul and for his grieving family. Funeral arrangements are as follows: Visitation at St. John Capistran Church, Sunday, February 22nd, 1-7 PM, with an Office for the Dead Prayer Service at 7 PM. A final visitation will be held at St. Thomas More Church, Monday, February 23rd, from 9-11 AM, followed by the Funeral Liturgy at 11 AM.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
