“TJ” Slay Granite City, IL Death, Obituary:Granite City Wrestling Legend Succumbs to Cancer
With the heaviest of hearts, the Granite City Wrestling community announces the passing of one of its most iconic figures, “TJ” Slay, who left us this morning at 2:00 AM after a valiant battle with esophageal cancer.
TJ’s legacy is etched in the very walls of Granite City. As a competitor, he achieved the awe-inspiring feat of a perfect 45-0 record in state championships, a testament to his unparalleled skill, discipline, and heart. His name is permanently memorialized on the state placer board and banners, a constant inspiration to all who enter the wrestling room.

Yet, his greatest victories were won not on the mat, but through the lives he shaped. After his competitive career, TJ poured his passion into coaching, mentoring generations of young athletes. He taught more than takedowns and escapes; he instilled character, resilience, and a relentless work ethic. His true monument lies in the hearts of the kids he coached.
TJ leaves behind a devastated family—his beloved wife and four children. Our community now stands united around them, offering prayers, support, and a promise to forever hold his name high. While his physical presence is gone, the indomitable spirit of TJ Slay will live on forever in Granite City. Thank you, TJ, for everything.
