It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Dominique Vervoort of Toronto, Ontario, after a long and courageous battle with metastatic melanoma. He was 31 years old.
A gifted cardiothoracic surgeon in training, Dominique’s impact far exceeded his years. He was a PhD candidate and Vanier Scholar at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, where his research focused on disparities in cardiovascular care—a testament to his deep commitment to equity.

Dominique’s visionary spirit was most powerfully felt in global surgery. A decade ago, he co-founded InciSioN, the International Student Surgical Network, uniting medical students worldwide with the goal of safer surgical care for all. He was instrumental in its growth, from registering the NGO in Belgium and contributing to major policy reports with global institutions, to personally funding its inaugural International Global Surgery Symposium in 2018.
Beyond his formal roles, Dominique was a generous and passionate ambassador for science. He devoted immense energy as a social media ambassador for organizations like EACTS, live-tweeting sessions and amplifying research to extend knowledge globally.
His loss is immeasurable. Dominique Vervoort leaves behind a legacy of brilliance, compassion, and transformative advocacy that will continue to inspire the global health community. He will be deeply missed.
